Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue announced Friday that Taylor Farms was the donor of the inaugural Gifts for Guns program.

Taylor Farms of California, Inc. donated $20,000 to fund the gift certificates that were given in exchanged for the collected guns. Also given out were "Terminate Violence" T-shirts donated by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Salinas doesn’t have enough police to stop gang violence and the city will have to further tap state and federal resources, in addition to getting residents engaged, to maintain security. This was Mayor Dennis Donohue’s message (albeit a familiar one) at his “State of the City” address this morning.

The Salinas City Council recently passed a so-called big box ordinance. I respect my colleagues on the council and from time to time we disagree on critical issues.This is one of these times. The City Council and public had a healthy and spirited dialogue. I just see this one differently than the majority of my colleagues.
